West Coast Skylights Coronavirus (Covid 19) Policy
West Coast Skylights acknowledge the impact coronavirus is having and our responsibility for the health of our employees. We are regularly monitoring government sites for information and updates. Any updates will be posted around the work place as soon as practicable.
There are no known cases of Coronavirus (Covid 19) in our workplace. Most people infected with Coronavirus (Covid 19) experience mild symptoms and recover. There is no current instruction from the Government to shut down our workplace.
The Department of Health's 'Infection Control Training - COVID 19' has been undertaken and implemented by all WCS members.
To prevent or reduce the impact of Coronavirus (Covid 19) on our workplace we have developed the following guidelines. This is for all staff and contractors working at our premises and on client / installation sites.
We aim to follow the Government requirements.
2.0 Everyone in the workplace should practice usual good hygiene by:
- Regularly clean hands with soap and water (minimum 20 seconds) or an alcohol-based hand rub before and after contact with people, food and personal hygiene. If hands are visibly dirty, wash them with soap and water
- Cover nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing, and dispose of used tissues immediately, then wash hands
- Avoiding close contact with anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms
- Wipe down public used surfaces after each use e.g. Phones, benches, keyboards
- Seek a health care professional if unwell, and stay away from the workplace and other public places
3.0 If you think you have Coronavirus (Covid 19) or if you have been in contact with a person who has a suspected Coronavirus infection
Any employees who think that they might have Coronavirus (Covid 19) and have been overseas in the past 14 days or have been in contact with people who have been overseas in the past 14 days, prior to the onset of their symptoms, to call ahead to the www.health.vic.gov.au hotline on 1300 651 160 for advice before attending work and inform them of their symptoms, travel history and concerns. You should report the advice from the hotline to your workplace as soon as possible
4.0Recognising the symptoms of Coronavirus (Covid 19)
If an employee thinks they have symptoms please visit the Victorian Government website for information about how to get tested and what further action they should take.
Typical symptoms (as provided by the Victorian government) can be:
- Breathing difficulties such as breathlessness
- Sore throat
- Fatigue or tiredness.
5.0What is the process if people are at risk?
Any employees who have these symptoms should immediately go home, seek medical attention via the phone, then do the following.

- Advise management of all interactions with other people and who they may have been in contact with:
- other employees during meetings, breaks or working in teams
- Return home and contact your GP or a screening clinic to organise testing
- Follow the instructions of the medical professional
- This may include self-isolation for a 14 period
- Update your manager with your medical diagnosis as soon as possible
- Seek a clearance from a medical professional before returning to work
COVID 19 Testing facilities.
All Hospitals with Emergency Departments have now set up Corona Virus Clinics for testing. Employees are required to contact their local GP via phone to find their closest testing clinic. Not all Medical Clinics have testing facilities.

6.0Who is most at risk?
In Australia, the people most at risk of getting the virus are those who have:
- recently been in in a high-risk country or region (mainland China, Iran, Italy or Korea)
- been in close contact with someone who has a confirmed case of COVID-19
Based on what we know about coronaviruses, those most at risk of serious infection are:
- people with compromised immune systems (such as people who have cancer)
- elderly people
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples (as they have higher rates of chronic illness)
- people with chronic medical conditions
- people in group residential settings
- people in detention facilities
To help protect people most at risk, we have recommended limits on public gatherings and visits to vulnerable groups.
7.0 Overseas Travel
Starting Monday 16 March 2020, Australians are being asked not to hold non-essential mass gatherings of 500 people or more.
- Australian citizens and permanent residents will still be able to enter, as will their immediate family members (spouses, legal guardians or dependants only). They will be required to self-isolate at home for 14 days.
- Australia will deny entry to anyone who has left or transited a country subject to travel restrictions within the previous 14 days, with the exception of:
- Australian citizens
- permanent residents
- New Zealand citizens resident in Australia
- immediate family members of Australian citizens and permanent residents including spouses, minor dependants and legal guardians
8.0 Information about home isolation when unwell (suspected or confirmed cases)
If an employee has been diagnosed with COVID-19, they must stay at home to prevent it spreading to other people.
- They may also be asked to stay at home if there is a possibility that they may have been exposed to the virus.
Staying at home means:
- do not go to public places such as work, school, shopping centres, childcare or university
- ask someone to get food and other necessities and leave them at their front door
- NO Visitors — only people who usually live with them should be in their home
They do not need to wear a mask in their home. If you need to go out to seek medical attention, wear a surgical mask (if you have one) to protect others.
They should stay in touch by phone and on-line with family, friends and the workplace.
9.0Looking after yourself during the Coronavirus (Covid 19) outbreak
- Try to maintain perspective: While it is reasonable for people to be concerned about the outbreak of Coronavirus (Covid 19), try to remember that medical, scientific and public health experts around the world are working hard to contain the virus, treat those affected and develop a vaccine as quickly as possible.
- Find a healthy balance in relation to traditional and social media coverage: Being exposed to large volumes of negative information can heighten feelings of anxiety.
- Access good quality information: It’s important to get accurate information from credible sources such as those listed. This will also help you maintain perspective and feel more in control.
- Try to maintain a practical and calm approach: Widespread panic can complicate efforts to manage the outbreak effectively. Do your best to stay calm and follow official advice, particularly around observing good hygiene habits. Try not to make assumptions.
- Maintain good physical health: Follow a balanced, nutritious diet, continue exercising and maintain healthy lifestyle habits. Minimise or quit smoking. Have the strongest immune system possible.
- Look after vulnerable people: Check in with and support any vulnerable people.

How long does an installation take?
Velux - Window Type skylights
Installations of a Velux window type skylights varies greatly due to many factors. We normally fit the Velux window usually done in a day.
What does take time is the roof carpentry and the other works to support the weight of the light well. This can sometimes take many days to make sure your installation is structurally sound.
Factors that can add to the duration of an installation include those with:
- multiple skylights ,
- that require more internal finishing,
- high ceiling, &
- limited access etc.
And, occasionally, the weather may delay our work.
A Sky Tunnel - Tube Type Skylight
For these units we allow five (5) hours, however, they are usually done in about four hours.
Why do you need to turn my power off?
It is the law in Western Australia nowadays.
We usually are onsite and ready to go at 7am each day.
Occasionally, due to weather or unforeseen issues an installation may take a little longer than estimated to complete. We do not get onto wet roofs as an incident on or from a wet roof is unjustifiable.
We do occasionally work on weekends. Many councils have work / noise restrictions on weekends and public holidays which we must abide by.
There are product warranties and installation warranties.
Velux and SkyTunnel are both premium products.
There is a 10 year warranty on Velux skylights..
The Velux blinds have a 3 year warranty.
SkyTunnels are supported by an industry leading “20 YEAR WARRANTY” on the base flashing and a 15 year warranty on all other components under normal environmental operating conditions.
As we use these premium products only, we have an industry leading 10 year installation warranty.
There is no warranty paperwork to complete! In the highly unlikely event of an issue, call and it will be remedied as quickly as possible.
What are your payment terms?
Payment is in two parts.
Part 1: The first payment is the deposit, which is the quoted price of the skylight/s, blinds and custom flashings, if required, some materials etc. This generally works out to be 1/3 of the quoted price.
This deposit is our cue to schedule your installation and order components not in our stock.
Part 2: The second payment is the balance of the quoted price for labour, fixings and other materials payable only on completion of the work to your satisfaction.
N.B: For jobs that go over five (5) days a progress payment may be required to pay wages etc.
We accept 'Direct Deposits' and EFTPOS (+1.9%).

Do Velux Window Type Skylights meet the Building Code of Australia (BCA) requirements?
There are two separate parts to this question. The BCA addresses fire separation and bushfire attack levels (BAL).
All VELUX Skylights/Roof Windows are deemed non-combustible and thereby comply with BCA Fire Separation requirements i.e. suitable for use within 900mm of a boundary for buildings of Class 1 & 10 (typical residential dwelling)*.
Only Velux's 2004 glazing option, which is one sheet of laminated glass beneath one sheet of toughened safety glass, meets the AS 1288 standard for use where the skylight is 3 metres or more above floor level.
When used with a custom flashing, all Velux window type skylights have a BAL rating of 40.
The Sun Tunnel, which is a tube type skylight has a BAL rating of 29 and this is ONLY when used with a RIGID TUBE.
If you are in a bushfire prone zone and your BAL is 40 or below, we can make your non-compliant skylight compliant. (N.B: This is not necessary, but, quite prudent, if your skylight was installed before the BAL system was implemented.)

We love animals, however, pets and installations do not mix well.
Their safety is important so they need to be kept separated from the work area and access routes.
Safe and quick access & egress to the work areas are important for timely installations.
Security is important, however, opening and closing gates and doors can add many hours and even days to a job.
For residential installations where no other renovation work is being undertaken all waste is removed.
Where other work is being undertaken at a residential installations all waste is left onsite in the appropriate areas/skips.
At building site installations all waste is left onsite in the appropriate areas/skips.
We recycle as much waste as possible.
Exact positioning is occasionally challenged by obstacles such as:
- electrical cabling,
- water & gas plumbing,
- air-conditioning ducting,
- structural timber and/or steel work,
- solar panels,
- roof valleys, hips and ridges etc.
Most of these are easily overcome and potential issues, if any, explained at the site inspection.
Can you install a 'Tray Ceiling' without a skylight?
Tray ceilings are an excellent way of making a room larger, relatively cheaply particularly when structural beams or other obstructions make skylights unviable.
Hidden LED strip lighting works particularly well in tray ceilings as well.
Do you charge to do a quotes &/or an estimate?
Quotations: Yes, we charge $55. per hour and a minimum of four (4) hours.
Quotations take a lot of time to do properly.
A quotation requires:
- a roof and ceiling space survey, &
- the writing of the quotation itself.
A quotation means your price is 'locked in'.
You cannot be charged more than is stated on the quotation unless you decide to make a variation.
A quotation contains:
- a detailed 'scope of works',
- a proposed 'schedule of works', &
- a materials list.
Not included on the quotation are other trades that may be needed including:
- Plumbers, &
- Air-conditioning techs etc.
A quotation is an excellent tool for enabling accurate comparisons between installation companies.
Estimates: No, we do not charge for estimates.
If it is early days for you and your installation an estimate may be a more suitable option for you at this stage.
An estimate can and will vary either up or down which is why it is important to receive several written fixed quotes before choosing your installer.
What are your travel charges?
Travel is an unavoidable business cost in both time and money.
We prefer to keep quotes itemised so you can see what you are paying for including travelling to and from the job site.
Everyone charges travel it is just rarely discussed and hardly ever shown on quotations.
We itemise travel charges to monitor costs and charge appropriately so we can remain operating.
Travel charges are to cover:
- servicing, &
Our charges are worked out on this basis:
- the distance measured by google maps from West Coast Skylights to job site.
- for distances under 20 kilometres - no charge.
- if over 20 kilometres, the full distance, less 20, are the kilometres charged each way for the number of days stated on the schedule of works and quotation.
- The charge on the quote cannot go up if extra trips are required.
- The rate is $0.66 cents per kilometre.
Example: From West Coast Skylights in Rockingham to the clients premises in Helena Valley is 44km.
44km less 20km is 24km, each way. $0.66. x 24 = $15.84. x 2 = $31.68. per day.
